Nappmed zone town a
Nappmed Town Zone A (AKA) United Patent Medicine Dealers (UPMDA) is a child of circumstance, born out of a desperate need to liberate the oppressed & Psychological traumatized people; through participatory democracy. After the Nigerian Civil (1967-1970) & between early seventy’s & eighty’s pocket of Nigerian Youth who survived the war came to settle in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in search of greener pastures, where they took up patent medicine vendor as their core calling (occupation). Majority of these vendors according to reliable sources were not Rivers indigenes.
Ironically, while the vast majority were the core Patent Medicine Dealers, the minority indigenes were the people controlling the affairs of the trade, through a wall of obnoxious laws that stipulate that only the indigene could assume the sensitive post of the Association, such as Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer etc.
Apart from the State, the same law reared its ugly head in Phalga which was as of then only five zones stretching from Borikiri, through Town to Rebisi, Aba Road and Mile 3.
The disparity was obvious & a real threat to civilized model like ours. These long gap of dissatisfaction and indigenes / non-indigenes dichotomy actually led to series of agitation & protest all to no avail. Therefore, between 1980 – 1995 Town Zone A had no option than to take her destiny into her hand by pulling out of Phalga Nappmed & that of state; by assuming the name & status of United Patent Medicine Dealers (UPMDA).
Our leaders & founding fathers were united and resolute to ensuring the evolution of a zone of freedom and equity where only qualified and credible persons irrespective of tribe and colour can unite in faith, trust & love in the service of humanity through their profession.
While we sincerely give Kudos to our heroes & God for success in that direction, we also prayed for our sustainable values & philosophy of oneness. The fact that Nappmed members can trade freely today without fear of intimidation is evidence that, the fight for total liberation of our zone, by the likes of late Chief Matthew Egbe, late Chief Chidex Obi, Bro. Albert Okorienta, Chief Gabriel Ikejiobi & Host of others was indeed never a chase of wild wind.
Today our mode of operation is unmatchable, Town Zone A has indeed demonstrated through her social cooperate responsibility that she is built on Pure Humanitarian Foundation, by giving out 100% percent of her asset to the less privilege in the event of extinction.
This is uncommon disposition and perhaps the secret of the zone’s outstanding success & by virtue of strict adherence to the provision of her Bye-Law.
Nappmed Town Zone A holds her monthly meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month, at our Lady’s of Lourdes Hall, along Creek Road, Port Harcourt from the hours of 10am. The governing body of the zone are the Elected Executives & Leaders Cabinet.
